I have my Father, Lloyd Nivens, to thank for getting me involved in fire service he was a volunteer with the Antonia Community Fire Department (as it was known prior to becoming a district in 1974). He took me on some of the fire calls. I knew at a young age what I wanted to be which; was a firefighter. I started as a junior firefighter in 1972 and became a volunteer in 1975. I worked my way through the ranks from Engineer then Captain and in 1996 was hired full time as Assistant Fire Marshal/Firefighter for the district. In 1997 I was promoted to Fire Marshal and in 2000 was promoted to Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal.  I graduated from Fox High School in 1978 and attended the Jefferson College fire science program. I completed the Missouri University Fire Officer’s certificate program of 368 hours.

I have been an adjunct instructor at Jefferson College since 2010 where I teach Building Construction and Fire Suppression System classes. I hold certifications from the International Code Council, am a certified Fire Arson Investigator and Fire Instructor with the State of Missouri. I am the current President of the Jefferson County Fire Investigation Team, Vice-President of the Jefferson County Fire Marshal’s Association, and past President of the Jefferson County Fire Marshal’s Association.  In 2010 I was awarded Fire Chief of the year by the Jefferson County Firefighters Association and have been awarded with three lifesaving awards.
The love for the job and the support of my family has kept me going all these years in the same profession.  It is a very rewarding job helping others, especially in the community you have been a part of all of your life.

I have been married to my loving wife Carol since 1978. We have two sons Mike and Brad who both are following in the family tradition of firefighting.  Currently Mike holds the rank of Captain with the Antonia Fire Protection District and Brad works as a fulltime firefighter with the district.

I enjoy spending time with my two grandchildren Connor, son of Mike and Mandi and Ava, daughter of Brad and Amanda. Also, when not working, I enjoy playing golf , watching Nascar and traveling with my wife.
